Emerald - Ms G Fleming 2021 - 2022
Year 1 & 2 Ms Fleming & Mrs Charmer
Welcome to Year 1 & 2 Autumn Term
A very warm welcome to you all in year 1 & 2, we are really looking forward to working with you and teaching you lots of exciting new things! We have so much to learn this year and we will have lots of fun and new experiences along the way.
RE: We will be learning about God's Chosen People and The Mystery of God
Pathways to Write: We will be using the text 'Lost and Found'. We will be predicting what will happen, remembering the phonics we know and improving our basic handwriting. We will write a fiction story based on the structure of the text.
These are the texts we will be using:
Pathways to Read: We will be using the text 'The bear and the Piano'. We will make inferences on the basis of what is being said and done. We will discuss the sequence of events in books and how items of information are related.
We will be learning about Place Value and what each digit represents in a number to 100. We will be ordering numbers and looking at the number bonds that make 10 and 20.
Science: We will be investigating Animals, including Humans.
In this unit children will learn about their senses and how they use them to describe the world. Children will identify and name the basic external parts of the human body and recognise the functions of some body parts, including the sense organs. Children will describe and compare common animals, and will recognise and name a variety of animals and their body parts. They will construct and label a map of the human body and will draw comparisons between human and animal body parts. They will consider how to treat other people and living things with care and respect.
History: We will be looking at the history of our area, our school in the past, our playground and the games children played.
Geography: We will study maps of our local area and the United Kingdom.
PE: Every Wednesday – please come to school in your PE kit.

Home Learning Pack
In the event that your child is self-isolating, please work through this learning pack - Year 1 or Year 2. Please find the learning pack at the bottom of this page under 'Files to Download'.
PLEASE USE OAK NATIONAL ACADEMY TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD IF SELF ISOLATING
Each lesson delivered by a teacher with a pre-recorded video as well as quizzes, worksheets and creative activities. It’s all easy to use, there’s no login or password, you can access our lessons on any device, and pupils only need materials they can find at home.
We have looked at Oak National Academy in class- it is a great resource for catch-up revision work and daily lessons if your are well but at home.
We did a Maths 'Time' lesson - children are forever asking the Time- Is it breaktime? Is it lunchtime? Is it assembly? I have to say - I love children wearing an analogue watch (watch with hands) to learn the time - they pick it up so naturally - o'clock, half past, quarter past/to etc.
Please continue to use the Letters and Sounds lessons
(Some children have been telling me they have been watching a lesson after school - Go Emeralds!)

Summer Term update – Friday 24th April 2020
Dear Parents & Guardians,
As I sit here at home, I have watched and listened to my own children try to make sense of this crazy situation, I wanted to offer some words of support for you and your children during this increasingly challenging time. At The Holy Spirit in year 1 & 2 we believe every child is a gift to be cherished and we are privileged that you have allowed us to share in their learning journey, to know them and love them as you do.
At this time of huge uncertainty, we recognise that some children are just as anxious or scared as we are right now. They not only hear everything that is going on around them, but they feel our constant tension and anxiety. They, like us, have never experienced anything like this before. Although the idea of being off school may seem awesome, they are probably picturing a fun time like the summer holidays and not the reality of being confined to their homes and not seeing their friends and extended families.
I have tried hard to update Dojo and School Spider to ensure home learning, whilst curriculum based is as fun and accessible as possible. If you have any questions or need any help in any way please contact me via Dojo. I am still here to help and support your child. I love receiving messages, photos and mini videos of the work you have completed. I will reward your child well with DOJO points!
What your child needs now though is to feel safe and loved. To feel like it is going to be ok – which it is. So that may mean some days you have to abandon that ‘perfect’ schedule. Play outside in the garden, go for a walk, if it is safe to do so. Play board games and watch favourite movies from your own childhood. Bake cakes and write letters to loved ones you are not able to visit in person. Find a virtual field trip or start a book and read it together as a family.
Every single child in our country, wider even – the world is in the exact same position. When we are back in the classroom, we will all take stock and pick up where we are. I am expert at doing this on a daily basis! Don’t get stressed if your child does not want to do their work one day – think of other exciting things they can do instead and come back to it later. Learning opportunities are all around us. I know you will do your best and your child will thrive because of it.
If I can leave you with just one thing, it’s this; your child’s mental health will be more important than their academic skills. How they felt during this time will stay with them for much longer than the Maths or English lessons you are struggling to get them to complete. So keep that in mind, each and every day.
I hope to see you all soon and remember to be kind to yourself and each other.
Love & prayers,
